I
recently posted a review for Mobile Suit Gundam Seed, and one of my
followers commented about how they created a Top 20 Anime list. After
reading that comment I began thinking about what my Top 20 Anime were.
The more I thought about it, the more I started coming up with the
titles that were truly dear to my heart. After taking a few days to go
over my list again and again, I finally came up with my Top 20 Anime.
Saint Seiya is an old school anime that originally aired from October 11, 1986 to April 1, 1989 in Japan. This was one of the first anime I ever watched when I first became aware of what anime was. Saint Seiya's plot focuses on the Greek goddess Athena and her 88 warriors known as Saints and how the Saints use to Power of the Cosmos and their cloths/armor to ward off the enemies of Athena as well as the enemies of Earth. I always thought the coolest thing about this anime was how the cloths/armors represented the Zodiac and constellations. This was a very enjoyable anime for me, as well as one that really ignited my interest in anime.
I recently did a review on Gundam Seed, and while it's one of my personal favorites, it honestly can't be ranked any higher than this. I absolutely loved Gundam Seem, everything from the plot to the characters. The problem is that I truly felt that 50 episodes was far too long. I hated the repetitive combat scenes and recycled images. The thing I loved most about this anime were the relationships. The complicated relationship between the best friends Kira and Athrun was what made this anime a major hit to me. While many people may not like Gundam Seed, this anime will forever have a special place in my heart.
Lets be honest here, Slam Dunk is the premier sports anime even to this day. I loved anime like Major, Prince of Tennis, Eyeshield 21, and Kuroko no Basket, but in all honesty, without Slam Dunk those anime may not have seen the light of day. This anime is what really brought the sports genre to the forefront. With a nearly perfect mix of comedy and seriousness along with some of the best sports action made Slam Dunk an absolute must-see anime even in this current age of anime.
Beck was an amazing music anime about a 14 year kid who felt disconnected from life. Through the strange twist of fate of saving an odd looking dog, the kid's life is turned upside down by meeting a guitarist named Ryuusuke Minami. Beck is easily my favorite anime from the music genre. Unique art and a great OST just had me in awe by the visuals and sound. While it is yet another of my favorite personal anime, it sadly only sits at #17. Keep in mind that I'm trying to be as unbiased as possible when ranking these.
Eve no Jikan is an ONA (Original Net Animation) that aired from August 1, 2008 to September 18, 2009. I found this anime to be very unique and different. I find this anime interesting due to the ideal of equality being applied. This ideal is different in Eve no Jikan due to it being applied to humans and androids, but the ideal of equality is still there. You have humans who are raised to believe that androids are nothing more than household appliances, but what happens when you follow your android and learn of a cafe where the only rule is that humans and androids are to be treated equal. This is the premise of Eve no Jikan, and surprisingly enough, they finish it well in only six episodes. This is an anime that I've seen many times over again, and no matter what I do, I always enjoy it.
Outlaws, space, and nonstop action and comedy. What's not to love??? Outlaw Star takes all the things I love about anime and throws them in to one huge thrill ride. The main character is absolutely funny and very memorable, which makes this anime very addicting. This is one of those anime that is full of win for those who love anime and those who are new to it.
A 14 year old kid dies in an accident and becomes a spirit detective, that is the whole premise for Yu Yu Hakusho. The question is, what's not to love about this??? This is one of my all-time personal favorites, but again it has to be ranked where it is as an unbiased ranking. The characters are so much fun and the plot just seems to grow on you as you watch. Definitely an anime that people should watch at least once in their lifetime if they truly enjoy anime.
This one should go without saying...I mean who doesn't know who Vash the Stampede is??? If this was about 10 years ago, Trigun would be ranked in the Top 5, if not at the top. Unfortunately I'm ranking everything I've seen up to today, and Trigun just happens to sit at #13. Extremely funny and full of gags while also getting serious at all the right moments makes Trigun one of the best anime ever made.
This anime is priceless!!!! While the plot has its funny moments, it has more serious moments than anything else. The characters who are constantly funny on a very consistent basis really livens this anime up. You will be left speechless with the story and characters, and most anime fans will find this to be one of the most enjoyable anime they will ever see. I loved this anime from beginning to end despite how some people may have perceived it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but NEVER try to force me to dislike an anime lol.
I'm ranking Code Geass as a whole, not separated between the first and second season. The thing I love most about Code Geass is the idea of a prince using an unknown power to overthrow the very family that he came from. The main character Lelouch Lamperouge proves to be one of the most entertaining and memorable anti-heroes in anime history. Who else can you think of that would create an crime organization to overthrow his family in the name of the people. This is truly an amazing anime that everyone should watch at least once.
Two close friends separated due to one friend and their family moving to another region in Japan. This movie seriously touched my heart due to me having the some of the same experiences. The cool thing is that I'm actually going through a similar situation right now. My best friend moved to Texas and one of the only ways we keep in touch is through texting. That's exactly what the two friends in this movie do. Another similarity is that the friend who was left behind also learns that they're moving. This is also similar to me in the sense that I'll be moving to California soon. This movie is about as close to my life as possible lol, but at the same time, I absolutely love it. A great story that was both enjoyable and heartwarming.
A former assassin who tries to atone for his past in the current era of peace. That is the main plot line of Rurouni Kenshin, and arguably the best thing about it. Kenshin Himura, the Hitokiri Battousai was known as the strongest assassin. The most appealing aspect of this anime is that they try to take someone with such a dark past and incorporate him in to living an everyday life. The most entertaining aspect of this anime is when Kenshin's friends are in put in danger and he uses that dark past to keep them safe. This is another one of my all-time favorites that finally cracks the Top 10.
I honestly can't help but feel bad for the main character, Rintarou Okabe. He learns how to time travel but that knowledge puts him and all his friends in danger. You follow two separate timelines, one where Okabe's childhood friend dies and one where the girl he falls in love with dies. The problem is that in both timelines one of the girls HAVE to die, and the only way to save both is to find that third timeline in which the both live. In this third timeline, the childhood friend lives happily alongside Okabe while the love interest lives happily but never meets Okabe. This was the best anime of 2011 in my opinion and should easily be one of the best anime of the decade. Seriously....how can you not feel bad for Okabe???
This does not imply the I disliked the original FMA series, it just means that I enjoyed this one a little more do to it following the manga's storyline. The plot is nearly flawless, the characters are hilarious and deep, the animation took the manga I loved and brought it to life. Just like Steins;Gate was the best of 2011, Brotherhood is the best of 2009-2010. Honestly, I watched this entire series for Mustang. The guy seriously cracks me up, he has me rolling even when he's serious.
This is easily the best anime movie I've ever seen. I think the main reason is due to the fact that it is somewhat realistic. Our generation is evolving technology at an amazing pace, but this movie shows what happens if technology is more advanced than we are prepared for. A truly engaging and flawless story combined with very normal and realistic characters really brings you down to Earth and begs the question "What if?".
Earlier I said that Slam Dunk was the anime that propelled the sports genre, and I honestly believe that. With that being said, Major is the anime that I feel perfected the sports genre. With a story that spans six seasons, one movie, and two OVAs, Major proved to have one of the deepest, if not the deepest story for a sports anime ever made. The story of how a little kid can overcome the hardships of losing someone he loved and looked up to so much and becomes one of the greatest Japanese baseball players really left me deeply moved. This is a must-see for anyone who calls themselves an anime fan.
Wizards, lots and lots of wizards plus tons of amazing fights and hilarious moments makes Fairy Tail one of the best anime I've seen in recent years. This is one of those anime where even the third and fourth tier characters can end up being some of your favorites. There's also the fact that the story is actually much deeper than most people would expect. When you combine over the top action with over the top comedy, you get a win-win situation.
This one is a very controversial choice. One Piece has many fans and many haters, and I won't deny that. With the never ending amount of characters that actually play a role in the anime and the ever growing story, One Piece has become of the best anime to ever be shown the light of day in 20 years. Plus there's always the hilarious obliviousness of the main character Luffy that makes it very entertaining to watch. This is without a doubt a Top 5 anime if I've ever seen one.
Fate/Zero is one of my major favorites. There's just something about a story that has to do with mages summoning Heroic Spirits from across history. Saber (King of Knights, Arturia Pendragon) and Archer (King of Heroes, Gilgamesh) remain as my favorite characters. The Heroic Spirits are the center point of this anime, and for good reason. Each hero has their own style of arrogance and confidence that make them appealing. Archer is probably the best at utilizing his arrogance and confidence though. This is one of the most recent anime productions that people can honestly be proud of and admit that they have seen it.
Similar to Summer Wars in a realistic sense, how many people can say that something such as the events in Eden of the East wouldn't happen. I truly believe that something like this is possible if there was someone determined enough to change their country. What I found to be most appealing was watching how each of the different characters would respond to being given the chance to change Japan. If I was given the opportunity to change the United States, I would definitely jump in to a game like this despite having to risk my life. This was an amazing anime that stands at the top of my list as my all-time favorite as well as what I believe to be the best anime ever made. This is solely my opinion and everyone is entitled to think differently, but to me this anime did what so few could do. Eden of the East will forever stand at the top of my anime collection as well as at the top of this list.
#20 - SAINT SEIYA: KNIGHTS OF THE ZODIAC
Saint Seiya is an old school anime that originally aired from October 11, 1986 to April 1, 1989 in Japan. This was one of the first anime I ever watched when I first became aware of what anime was.
